Botox® Injection - Questions & Answers

 What is Botox®?

BOTOX® is a novel therapeutic agent derived from the bacterium, Clostridium Botulinum. Also known as Botulinum Toxin Type A, the brand BOTOX® is produced in controlled laboratory conditions and given in extremely small therapeutic doses.

BOTOX® is indicated for the treatment of blepharospasm associated with dystonia in patients 12 years of age and above. BOTOX® is being investigated for several conditions associated with overactive muscle activity.

Botulinum Toxin Type A is the most studied of the seven different serotypes of botulinum toxin (A, B, C1, D, E, F, G). Each serotype has different properties and actions. No two are exactly alike.  How does Botox work?

Normally your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. BOTOX® works to block the release of acetylcholine and, as a result, the muscle doesn't receive the message to contract. This means that the muscle spasms stop or are greatly reduced after using BOTOX®, providing predictable and reliable relief from symptoms.

BOTOX® is not a cure. For many patients, however, its effects have been dramatic - symptoms usually begin to dissipate within a few days and the effects can last for approximately three months.  Who is the right candidate for Botox?

Ask your doctor if BOTOX® is the right treatment for you. BOTOX® should not be used during pregnancy, if you are nursing, or if you are taking certain medications. Only your physician can determine the best course of therapy.  What are the safety issues or side effects of Botox?

All medications have some side effects.
With BOTOX®, side effects are usually transient and mild to moderate in nature.

Some people notice temporary weakness of muscles or discomfort at the injection site. Based on a recent study of BOTOX® in the treatment of blepharospasm, drooping of the eyelid occurred in 20.8% of patients. Other side effects may include eye irritation, dry eye, tearing, light sensitivity (10%), and superficial punctate keratitis.  How long does it take to havea Botox injection?

The average time is 45 - 60 minutes, but it varies depending on the number of sites to be injected.  Before Botox injection instructions?

Botox requires no pretesting but there are a few precautions before being treated. Do not use Aspirin, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, St.John's Worth, or high doses of vitamin E supplements prior to treatments because they may increase bruising or bleeding at injection sites.  After Botox injection instructions?

Do not exercise for 24 hours.

Avoid lying down or massaging the treated area for 4 hours after treatment.  Testimonials from Botox injection clients?

I am so pleased with the results of my Botox injection in Soboba Weight Loss, it makes me look as refreshed as I feel. The staff is extremely nice and gentle.

Janet R.- Irvine, CA  How painful is a Botox injection?

Botox is injected into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultra fine needle resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. Some patients may experience discomfort around the injection site. To minimize discomfort during the procedure, your physician may anesthetize the treatment area.  How much does a Botox injection cost?

Botox is a customized procedure based on your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. You may require more than one syringe of Botox in your initial treatment to achieve optimal results. In general the cost of Botox is comparable to cost of similar procedures. Because Botox lasts about six months, it proved to be very economical over the long term. Please set up an appointment to discuss the costs after you have been evaluated.  How do you administer a Botox injection?

BOTOX® is injected into the muscle. Your doctor will determine the muscle(s) in need of treatment.
The procedure is just requires 20 - 30 minutes
A very fine needle is used for the one to three injections that are usually given per muscle. Some patients report minor and temporary discomfort from treatment.

Usually, you will see the effects of BOTOX® within three days. The maximum benefit is reached in one to two weeks.  How long do the results of a Botox injection last?

Botox Injections are proven to deliver long lasting results. Studies have shown that Botox effects generally last for about 4 to 6 months.
